ART PARIS 2023 K.A.A PICKS

On March 29 Art Paris opened its doors for first visitors. If you did not get your V.I.P pass this year, here’s your quick overview of my picks from this year’s edition.

Art Paris keeps its solid place on Parisian scene, even if some galleries’ choices here and there leave me quite perplexed. Yet, I am here to talk good and not bad so enjoy my selection and tell me if your favorite piece is on my list.

Salvador Dali, Illustration pour le projet de l’ouvrage d’Homère “L’Odyssée”, 1969, 77 x 56,2 cm; galerie MAYORAL

Galerie Mayoral opens the selection with a discrete but raffinante piece by Salvador Dali. I have already seen his sketch from this project at this Christie’s auction years ago and still regret my client did not fight for it.

Gérard Schneider, Composition 1984, 150 x 146,6 cm, Galerie Patrice Trigano

With Perrotin’s support Gérard Schneider makes a kind of comeback and the interest to his pieces rises since last year. So if you are post-war abstraction lyrique it’s time to hop in with  Composition 1984 presented by Galerie Patrice Trigano. To be honest, this Swiss artist didn’t feel to me like my cup of tea but this vibrant piece got my full attention. I love the colour. I love the gesture. I love the movement. It is a solid « yes ».

If you ever possess a tapestry by Grason Perry I highly recommend you to take a closer look on two following pieces.

ROMÉO MIVEKANNIN, Le Printemps d'après Botticelli, 2022, 222,5 x 313 cm, Galerie Eric Dupont.

I am deeply convinced that apparent visual quoting as well as the title using « after smth. » formulation in a risky business. Yet, Roméo Mivekannin played this tricky game and won. It’s fun, intense and weirdly erotic in a discreet way. I enjoyed this piece very much. Great choice, galerie Eric Dupont

Kubra Khademi, The Great Battle, 2023, Galerie Eric Mouchet

Kubra Khademi’s piece on Galerie Eric Mouchet’s stand is a full knockout. This Afghani woman is young (1989), rebellious, smart and defeats her own dragons. So powerful and devine. I’d compare her to millennial version of Frida Kahlo and you won’t change my mind.

Surrealistic erotical narration by Turkish Artis Irmak Dömez also caught my eye and if I asked the Martch Art Project to wrap them all for me I would definitely add Andrés’ Orjuela’s wrestlers presented by La Balsa Arte. Both pieces are filled with obvious sexual tension but also with tenderness and venerability.

I would top them with Vincent Gicquel’s Crime from RX&SLAG boot to add more sensual and creepy intense drama to this party.

Vincent Gicquel’s, Crime, 2021, RX&SLAG

Talking about parties. The harem by Roger-Edgar Gillet is not one I would like to go to but the one I definitely enjoyed on Rodolphe Janssen boot. Abstract-figurative balance brings hypnotic movement that covers the narration of women from the painting like a veil.

Roger-Edgar Gillet, Le harem (Signal), 1969, 200 x 300 cm, rodolphe janssen

This year I did not get a chance to enjoy Art Paris longer and while the opening is going on, I am on my way to my next destination, so if you think that I missed something/ someone get in touch and, of course, subscribe to our newsletter.
